Hybrid Health and Usage Monitoring with Autonomous Wireless Sensor Platform

The NELA HyWAYs project builds up on the research conducted under the @MOST SWAN project working on the optimisation, reliability and security of wireless sensor technology for aeronautical maintenance applications.

The NELA HyWAYs project has a duration of three years and is a continuation of the achievements reached during the SWAN project. Within the SWAN project, a prototype Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) was used to demonstrate a modular multi-application system for aeronautical maintenance services with innovative software and hardware.
After this successful prototype demonstration with over thirty sensors in a cell, HyWAYs focuses on a specific novel maintenance application to continue developing further aspects of the aeronautical WSN. This application is hybrid health and usage monitoring. It consists on introducing predictive maintenance through the use of wireless sensors by monitoring the structural integrity of the aircraft fuselage.
On one side, research will be devoted to the development of a mathematical model to determine the load suffered on the fuselage, where wireless sensors will be installed in several bolts.

On the other side, further development will focus on the miniaturisation of the sensor hardware.
TriaGnoSys’ main project contributions are related to the optimisation of networking aspects and to the robustness of the wireless system. To this end, software will be optimised to support uplink and downlink redundancy, multiple cells and to be more robust against failures. Furthermore, concepts to cope with interference and to counteract jamming will be developed.
The NELA HyWAYs project is co-funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie).
